  • Play pretend. Take turns being the dentist and the patient with a toothbrush and mirror at home.
  • Read books or watch videos about visiting the dentist to make the idea familiar before you arrive.
  • Choose your words carefully. Skip “hurt,” “shot,” or “needle” — let a friendly tooth doctor stay the frame.
