Your Pediatric Dentistry Questions, Answered
Cobblestone Kids Pediatric Dentistry knows you have important questions, so we want to make it easy for you by providing some answers.
Before Treatment
Most procedures at Cobblestone Kids, such as cleanings, sealants, and fluoride treatments, are painless. If your child requires restorative care (fillings, crowns, extractions, etc.), we use gentle techniques, distraction like TV or music, and in some cases local anesthetic or sedation to keep them comfortable. Many families describe visits as “seriously painless” or even fun.
Simple preventive treatments typically take less than one hour. Sealants, fluoride treatments, and cleanings can usually be done in one visit. More involved restorative appointments (e.g., fillings, crowns, pulpotomies) may take longer depending on what’s needed, but they are scheduled to minimize stress.
Yes—unless treatment requires sedation. For routine care and most operative treatments including fillings and crowns, your child will be awake but numbed with local anesthesia if necessary, and kept calm through conversation, distraction, and breaks.
Cobblestone Kids is in-network with most PPO dental plans, including Aetna, Cigna, Delta Dental, MetLife, United Concordia, Guardian, and Assurant. Payment is due at the time of service, with deductible and co-payment estimated and collected; the office will help file claims. Your child’s treatment is tailored to their needs—not insurance limits—so it’s wise to review your dental policy for exclusions or age limits.
Each treatment recommendation is personalized. Clinical exams and x-rays (if needed) help us determine what’s necessary. Preventive options like fluoride or sealants and early restorative care are designed to stop problems from getting worse and avoid more extensive treatment later.
For preventive visits like cleanings or sealants, there are no special restrictions—just normal healthy snacks are fine. If your child is having restorative treatment or sedation, we’ll provide specific instructions ahead of time (such as fasting before sedation). Please follow these carefully.
Yes, you are welcome to stay in the room and hold your child’s hand if you'd like. We encourage comfort, connection, and calm throughout the visit, and our team will make sure both you and your child feel supported.
After Treatment
If local anesthesia was used, wait until numbness wears off (usually 1–2 hours) before eating to avoid accidental biting. Otherwise, soft foods right away are fine unless specific restrictions were provided.
A little bleeding or discomfort is normal after extractions or pulpotomies. Apply a clean gauze pad with gentle pressure, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Children’s pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be used if needed. Call us if pain persists or worsens after 48 hours.
Yes. Especially after cleanings, sealants, or minor fillings. If your child received sedation, had a pulpotomy, or an extraction, it’s best to rest at home for the day. We’ll let you know what’s appropriate before you leave.
Continue brushing and flossing gently around the treated area. If we gave you special instructions—like avoiding sticky foods or not brushing near an extraction site—follow those carefully. For fluoride or sealants, no special care is needed beyond regular hygiene.
Yes—numbness from local anesthetic can last 1 to 2 hours. If it continues longer or your child is drooling, talking differently, or chewing on their cheek or tongue, please give us a call for guidance.
We’ll let you know based on your child’s needs. Most kids are seen every six months for cleanings and exams. If additional treatment is needed, we’ll schedule those visits as appropriate.
Some treatments—like fluoride or sealants—are preventive and may be repeated periodically. Restorative care like crowns or fillings is designed to last, but we’ll continue monitoring everything during routine check-ups to ensure everything is stable and healthy.
